Qs about being religious thread

deletedalmost 8 years

In real life lately, I have had a lot of good questions from non-Christians (Muslim, Jew, Hindu, etc) about being Christian and our beliefs. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask them here. I am open to respectful discussions on this matter here or in PM. I am a Christian, but I have soul searched on this topic a lot over the years..

Ah well, lots of Christian cults kill people too. At least those Greeks didn't pretend their gods were all good and all-knowing. Their gods had flaws too, one of the things I like about Greek mythology.

Also Gentleman, I'm too lazy to respond to everything you say, but to start with your second response - lots of religious people DO think their religion is 'the right one' and that others go to hell. Your response doesn't even answer that question. I'm too tired to respond to the rest.

I thought maybe Greek Paganism wasn't so bad until I found out that the Cult of Dionysus killed and ate people during their orgies.

That sounds pretty dope

Another fun fact:
One of the most accepting societies to ever exist was Mongolia. They built temples for all the different religions, then they'd throw big debates amongst the scholars. They'd debate till they got too drunk to continue. Which is the system we should take up tbh.

Maybe you're referring to the cause of it, which honestly is something no one knows yet, but to jump to the conclusion that there must have been a creator and that creator is precisely the Judeo-Christian god is something that requires extraordinary amount of evidence.

I'm saying that I can say cuthulu started the big bang, you can't really prove me wrong. You can say provide the evidence that cuthulu exists, and I can just reply provide the evidence he doesn't.
I wasn't trying to be specific that it was the judeo-christian God. I'm not even religious. Just a lot of these atheistic "intellectuals" arguments are really bad.

"What makes the bible and an unproven, unseeable god different from fairies? ": How can you believe the Big Bang theory, if there's no tangible evidence to prove it and that it wasn't some intelligent design?

Are you comparing the Big Bang theory that has been empirically proven for decades to the Bible?

If God is omnipotent why does he allow suffering: In the abrahamic religions it was because of the original sin. If God controlled everything then we wouldn't truly have freedom of choice now would we?

Do you believe in science, how do you defend your beliefs?: There's a good portion of christians who say that the 7 days was only symbolic or it was misinterpreted, considering the view that God doesn't work in our time. Since 1951 Catholics believe that God just started the process for the Universe to be created and it took place over millions of years.

Religion was created to explain a lot of things, we don't need that now: That is your opinion, there is still a lot of things left unexplained by science. The belief that there is some type of God that started everything instead of everything happened just because is a very similar belief to me.

Do you think children should be raised as independent people that have the possibility to choose?: I believe the whole concept of being a parent is to lead and guide your child into what is acceptable culturally and what is best to set their morals. That's wholly up the parent of how they see fit.

Bible is written by a bunch of people after the stories have taken place: That is only the Judaic portion, the new testament was a combination of letters and other writings from people who had witnessed Jesus same with islam. Jews have more reasons to adhere to the laws of the old testament than christians or muslims do, because they have their own prophets who tell them their new sets of guidelines to live by.
In actual christian belief they are not supposed to judge anyone because they are sinners and can't provide true judgement on who is a greater sinner.

Fun fact: Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world. So its ironic how aggressive people are towards it in western nations.

I like how ladynemisis rants was plussed by whitepimp when the arguments are really dumb.

"How do you know your religion is the right one": They would just say faith

"Did people just go to hell before Christianity": I don't know if you know this, but there's three Abrahamic religions that branch off each other. First you have Judaism which was founded 3500 years ago. Then Christ came along Christians and to my slight understanding muslims too believe he was the messiah. Where muslims differ is that they have Muhammad who said that Christians are wrong and that Jesus was just a prophet otherwise he wouldn't of died.
So in short Judaism was right until it wasn't.

"What makes the bible and an unproven, unseeable god different from fairies? ": How can you believe the Big Bang theory, if there's no tangible evidence to prove it and that it wasn't some intelligent design?

Religion is the root of lots of evil: This is just a poor argument. Religions in itself isn't the root of evil. People have and will continue to find reasons to kill each other without religion and its been the human condition to kill those different from us whether it be because of race, culture, ideology whatever.

Do you believe in science? If yes; how can you defend your beliefs? If no; how can you believe in something that can't be proven, while disregarding things that can?

A long, long, time ago religion was created to explain a lot of things that people just could not explain. (Like thunder, "Wodan who rode on his sleigh through the skies", and stuff like that). We don't need that anymore now, since we know way more about the world. Why do you still need it?

Did god create us, or did we create god? The latter is more logical, why do you believe in the first?

Do you think children should be raised as independent people that have the possibility to choose themselves what they believe or not? Or do you think it's ok to just drag them along to church and tell them what they should believe?

The bible is written by a bunch of people after the stories have been told from one generation to the other for decades. Why do you think it holds any truth? It's also written in a time where people thought way differently about human rights. Do you take the bible and it's rules literal, or do you 'translate' them to more modern ways? Like; are you still against homosexuality? If so; how do you compare that to the statement to love others? And how do you connect denying people to be who they are to a 'loving god'? And if you don't take the bible and its rules literal, how do you defend THAT?

Ah, questions, questions.

Why do you think your religion is the 'one true religion'? There are so many religions. What makes yours 'better' or 'more real' than other christian beliefs, judaism, islam, or the polytheistic religions?

Do you believe in heaven and hell? Do you believe people that believe in the 'wrong religion' go to hell?
If so; Christianity is maybe 2000 years old, did everyone before that time just go to hell? Or was judaism the thing back then? Why did it change?

Why do you believe in your christian god, do you believe in fairies too? What makes the bible and an unproven, unseeable god different from fairies?

Religion is the root of lots of evil things in the world. Don't you think the world would be better off without religion in the first place?

if god is omnipotent and all, why does he (or she) accept suffering? Isn't the current state of the world proof that god is either NOT omnipotent, or NOT really good?
