Focus more on the voice in their speaking then their actions. People make mistakes frequently and then everyone jumps on their and votes them because of it. Never use one of the "default scumtells" as a reason to justify a vote. Never. Also don't hesitate to be that town who defends someone who is being sheeped, because you always have to give them that chance because often times the maf just attacks the weakest town pointing out their potential mistakes, and the rest of the town just follows them because it seems viable to them then they end up voting wrong, it happens a lot more than you'd think.
